[The Crème Shop] Hyaluronic Acid Overnight Gel Mask - Review

by - May 10, 2018

Hey Guys! ✨
Today i'm going to be talking about one of the sleeping masks a picked up about 3 weeks ago:

The Crème Shop - Hyaluronic Acid Overnight Gel Mask

I purchased this overnight mask not too long ago from TK Maxx, i'd missed it the first time I came across it last year, but luckily it came back! what initially drew me towards this product was the cute, crisp simplistic packaging which is synonymous with a lot of The Crème Shop products! plus as a bargain price of £4.99...I couldn't let it go again haha!

The product itself comes in a light blue (somewhat art deco inspired) box. One the right side of the box it gives a brief explanation of what the Gel Mask is:

💧Hyaluronic Acid:

"This hyaluronic acid sleep-in mask adds moisture to the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines & improving skin's moisture content. Apply before bed and wake up to perfectly moist, dewy skin

On the left side it states it's suggested usage:

"Massage an even layer over clean, dry skin before bedtime. Concentrating on face, neck, or any areas that need extra moisture. Allow to work over-night, no need to rinse, wake up to hydrated, noticeably brighter skin!"

On the back of the box is also has the products listed ingredients:

"Water, Dipropylene Glycol, PEG-240/HDI Copolymer Bis-Decyltetrade-ceth-20 Ether, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, PEG-100 Stearate, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Glycereth-26, Caprylyl Glycol, Allantoin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Adenosine, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Polyglutamic Acid, CI 42090"

This product is also designed in the USA, Made in Korea and is Cruelty Free!

The glass jar itself is rather small and delightful too! I do really like the design of these gel masks as they're rather simplistic and cute! The main product features a gold screw top lid with "The Crème Shop" embossed on the top. Around the middle of the jar it simply states what the product is and on the back, the suggested usage (incase you misplaced or threw the box away haha!)

The white label wraps around the whole of the product, at the bottom it also states the weight (which is 70g or 70ml), where the product is made (Korea), the suggested timeframe in which to use the product after opening (which is 12 months), and the "recycle" symbol as the product can be recycled! It might be cute to pop hair clips or bobbles into the jar once you've used the product up! as it's quite asthetically pleasing on a dressing table haha!

A close up of the embossed detail on the lid, I think it gives the jar an expensive classy look. Definitely doesn't make it look cheap to me haha!

When you unscrew the lid for the first time, you'll be greeted by a while plastic seal surrounding a white "cap"

This is for hygiene reasons and is easily removed by finding the "dotted" line at one side. Simply lift and the whole seal will come away smoothly.

After removing the plastic seal, and the white plastic "cap", I was really surprised at the consistency of the product. It looks silky smooth and franky looks untouched! The best thing about it, is even if you disturb the contents after a while it'll revert back to this flawless "new" product look which is actually refreshing every time haha!

So I used a spatula every time I used this product to get the contents out the jar. However it can prove to be a little difficult, since the consistency of the product (if I had to compare it) is similar to that of Jelly/cottage cheese. It can be clumpy and doesn't like to stick to spatulas (so I recommend a spatula with a slight grove to make it easier to "scoop" the product out) but once you actually get it out the jar it's better to use the spatula to flatten and smooth the product on your face (as if it's in clumps on your face, it'll simply fall off 😶)

The product itself is also quite milky in colour and there's also a slight fragrance that accompanies this product. I'd probably describe it as some sort of floral scent? however it's actually quite refreshing and isn't at all overwhelming, so personally I can live with that haha! It doesn't go on smoothly per say, hence where the usefulness of a spaluta comes into play! As shown in the picture above, the product can be slightly clumpy when applied to the skin, and will need to be pressed and "spread" to allow your skin to absorb it better. I found that whilst spreading the product it somewhat "melts" so it's easy to extend it to other areas of your face.

Comparing this to the "Tony Moly - Banana Sleeping Pack" I previously reviewed, I found this one to be hard to absorb. I felt that it took a while to "pat" the product into my skin, and eventually it absorbed it. So not something to do if you're exhausted and have no patience haha! However the process can be sped up, if you only apply a little of the product to you face (so there's less product to absorb).

When my skin eventually fully absorbed it, it gives a somewhat "matte" look. It's not shiny, or greasy (The Banana sleeping pack can give off both of these things, which I like!) because of this, I don't feel like it looks hydrating? of course it's not just about the looks, but comparing it to the previous sleeping pack where the consistency was much more rich and creamier and looked like it covered the skin in a hydrating protective film. This was somewhat surprising, the difference between them!

When waking up the next morning my skin wasn't really as hydrated as it is when i've used the Banana Sleeping pack. However, I do like that I don't have to worry too much about getting the product on my pillow since it leaves the matte texture/look on my skin. Even though you don't have to wash it off, I usually do anyway since I like to start with my morning routine. And after washing off the product it does leave my skin somewhat soft and supple, which is nice! It's nice to know that if you're running late you don't have to wash this mask off, and i'm confident it'll continue to support the skin throughout the day.

I also found this product to be quite gentle, as I didn't break out and it doesn't seem to irritate my skin in anyway. So if you have sensitive skin, this is a product you may want to check out!

Here are my Pros and Cons based on my own individual use of this product!

Pros:

Small Size:
I found that it's cute somewhat "small-ish" size allows you to be able to take it with you on your travels, whether that's abroad, away for the weekend or even taking it with you to work! It's the smallest face mask in terms of packaging that I own, and would be completely fine to take on a plane with you (In the UK the limit is 100ml per item, and this is 70ml!)

Lasts a While:
I've used this a few times already, and every time I open it it literally looks like it's not only not been touched (due to the "jelly" like texture) but it doesn't seem to have gone down at all haha! I also realised you don't need a lot of this product at all, since if you apply too much it can be harder for your skin to absorb and takes longer in terms of "patting" it in.

Cons:

Not Easy to "Apply"
Because of the interesting texture and consistency of the product, it was like trying to apply cottage cheese to my face haha! Applying with your fingers I feel will prove a little inconvenient. So a spatula is a better option in terms of getting the product out the jar and using it to smooth out and flatten the product on the surface of your skin to allow you to then "pat" the rest in.

Leaves a "Matte" Finish
Now this one is mostly down to personal opinion, as I didn't really enjoy the Matte appearance/feel of the gel mask (I suppose i'll get used to it). Since I didn't really feel like it hydrated my face as much as i'd like it too, plus comparing it to the previous sleeping pack I reviewed. However, as mentioned before, a benefit of this is no excess product on your pillow!

Overall, it was an alright product to use. Not really my favourite however it's different from what i'm used to, therefore if I decide that I fancy a sleeping gel mask that isn't greasy and leaves more of a "matte" finish, at least I have this! I also purchased another 2 gel masks by The Crème Shop, including the Collagen and Rose version so i'm wondering if the consistency will be the same as this one 🤨 Either way, if you're not a fan of greasy/shiny sleeping masks and want something that will absorb somewhat easily (depending on the amount dispensed on the skin) and leaves a finish that won't come off on your pillow. This is a gel mask you should check out!
